While reading the book by Guy Kawasaki titled "Art of Start 2.0" a guide for anybody wanting to start something I found 2 top ten lists which he had created - Top Ten Lies series one for entrepreneurs and the other for VCs. This sprang a thought on me that I can do one for Engineering teams. So here it is ... Legal Disclaimer: All phrases and incidence portrayed in this blog are a work of fiction. Close your eyes and let me know what picture comes to your mind when I say the word Optimism?
A vast majority of us associate optimism with the familiar image of a glass which is half full or half empty, depending on how you view it. In theory, someone who sees the glass as half-full is an optimist. A pessimist, on the other hand, sees the glass as half-empty. Optimistic people look at their futures with anticipation and eagerness, whereas pessimistic people tend to look at their futures with hopelessness and negativity. I am sure you all would have had a great Idea, the idea which may have spawned during a strategy meet, sitting through a boring seminar, reading an interesting article or a coffee chat with your old friend. At that time you would have felt the "AHA" emotion and even written it down somewhere for acting on it.
Then, somehow, in the cloud of busy working days that AHA moment would have vanished into insignificance thanks to the mountain of paperwork, mundane status reporting and other daily chores. Then one day while clearing the mess on your plate you stumble upon the note - the once AHA idea currently does not evoke the same feeling. It only irritates you because you have let the idea and its inspiration fade away. Having researched a lot in the past few months and over the last 10 years having seen many people, I find some trend in all the attributes of a successful person. They have certain characteristics in certain exact value which is their secret or magic wand.
To try and come up with data, I started jotting down the list and then tried to pick what I believe are some of the important human attributes which we must enhance or acquire to make our self and our life better in this world. Of course all of you would know these attributes but with some explanations maybe you can relate the impact of these on your career advancement or in your personal life. One of the things that can befuddle managers, even experienced ones, is how to make small talk with their big bosses or industry moguls.
When you are talking about someone who has complete authority over you, be it your boss’s boss or the CEO, the word “small” becomes relative. Anything involving a boss can have a big impact. A conversion with them is like a double-edged sword. It can bring you great opportunity and quick recognition but the flip side is the fear of making wrong statements that lead to your downfall. |
